2010 Success Story: Tim Wellik

I joined Punch shortly after the open house sometime in March of 2010. I was rather reluctant to swing the kettle bells due to a stress fracture in my lower back in 2007 but the other exercises and core workouts looked like something I would like to do. At first I thought I may only have time for one workout per week but Henry encouraged me to get to the gym at least two or three times per week. My initial goals were to work on my core to strengthen my back as I am a dentist. My exercise up to this time consisted of playing racquetball once per week, working in my garden and yard, throwing a softball for an hour with my daughter once per week at her pitching lesson, an occasional bicycle ride in the neighborhood and walking. I had no intent of losing weight or strength training.
After the first couple of sessions, I realized how out of shape and weak I really was. The 8 kg. bell seemed heavy and my stamina was very short. There was more than once I thought about not attending any more but after about 4 weeks I had lost over 10 pounds and I had more energy during the day. I was starting to increase the size of the kettle bells I was using for different exercises and I really enjoyed the variety of the workouts. The ropes, agility drills, runs around the building, learning new exercises and being pushed by Henry and Chris made my workouts enjoyable. I actually started to look forward to my workouts and felt very guilty if I missed. I also began to notice I started to put some more weight back on which I now know is lean muscle mass.
It has now been over 9 months since I started working out at the north location. I am much stronger and my stamina is incredible. My body looks and feels better. My wife has commented on how much stronger I am and she is very supportive of my taking the time to workout. I still do not have that ability to push myself to work out on my own so I am so very thankful for Henry, Chris and Glen for being there to push me to new heights. Also, since I started working out I have bowled my best game ever, 209 and today I shot a 77 golfing which is the best I have shot in probably 15 years!!
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Dr. Brian Wilson

We are very blessed to have had Brian come into our lives. It’s sad that Brian passed away on his way to our grand opening. It was his dream to be able to offer such a big impact on others and his dream had finally come true. But we are not done. Brian and I had a vision and I am far from finished. He was so excited for the future."

The next kb sport camp is coming up in a few short weeks. We will be covering jerk. Get in where you fit in.

Dr. Brian Wilson

I want to extend our thoughts and prayers to Dr. Brian Wilson's family during this tough time. Dr. Brian was a true gentleman and warrior, his passion for the physical culture was deep and was a great motivator to us all to do our best. We know your smiling down upon us and we strive to make you proud, Brian. We will miss you greatly.

"Begin by acknowledging your warriorship. Think, feel, and act like a warrior. Set yourself apart from the rest of society by your personal excellence. Where warriorship was once a birthright, it is now a calling." . - this is one of Brian Wison's quote he loved.

Registration: Email Henry@punchgym.com with any questions or call 512-219-0251. Registration closes October 1st. Spots are filling up, register asap.

Logistics:
The Kettlebell Snatch is defined as lifting one Kettlebell overhead from the "Swing" action in one continuous movement. A repetition is counted when the legs are locked out, the working arm is locked out and parallel to the head, with a final fixation of the Kettlebell. The Kettlebell must be returned to the Swing position in one continuous movement, and although the Lifter may Swing the Kettlebell one or multiple times before Snatching, they may not rest with the Kettlebell in a hanging position. The Lifter may not touch the Kettlebell to their body or touch the body with the non-working arm.

Rules:

· Lockout consists of straight elbow and straight legs and the bell is not moving around, there is a strong indication of a final fixation (locked out). A finish with bent knees or bent elbow with bell moving will not count.

· Only rest spots are above head in the lockout or by continuously swinging the bell, the bell may not be in the rack or be stopped during swinging motion, if it stops the set is done

· 3 no counts in a row you will be asked to put bell down. We want to be safe.

· The Lifter is not permitted to touch the kettlebell with the non-working hand, and is further disallowed to use the non-working hand as any support for the execution of the exercise (knee, ground). It is permitted to adjust clothing, clear sweat or scratch an itch.

· Time starts at 0:00 and ends at 10:00

World Kettlebell Championships 2010

It has been a humbling journey and it has only just begun. I want to thank everyone for there support and influence to help drive me to be the best I can be.
The World Kettlebell Championships in Chicago was amazing, the professionalism of all the lifters showed through their hard work on the platform. The sport truly demands alot of respect and it is great to see everyone succedding.
Here is a compilation of my Biathalon performance; 28kg bells, Jerks 55reps 10min and snatches 48L & 48R for a total score of 103. I earned first place in the 80kg body weight division and even though I didn't do enough reps for Canidate of Master of Sport, I feel I'm heading in the right direction. A big special thank you to Chris Duffy for being a great coach!
I also competed in Longcycle Strong Sport with a 32kg bell and I earned Rank S-32, 16L, 16R, one time hand switch 4min. Enjoy!
You like what you see ...Punch Austin is hosting a snatch competition Oct. 2. Be there!
